The focus of the Policy Academy was on promoting behavioral health on HBCU campuses and developing a workforce that can address the behavioral health needs of the American public. The Academy featured interactive plenary sessions and skill building workshops that explored leadership development, career development, strategic planning and program sustainability and the use of social media as an outreach tool. 21 schools from Historically Black Colleges and Universities along with the faculty and staff were invited to attend the Academy.

Westover Consultants Inc. provided technical as well as logistical services for this event.

2011 FCBSI Technical Assistance Conference – San Antonio

The Faith and Community Base Support Initiative (FCBSI) held its summer technical assistance and training meeting in San Antonio, Texas at the Embassy Suites River Walk Hotel June 26 -30, 2011. Eighty two attendees from 25 organizations in 23 states and the District of Columbia attended. Several prominent local officials addressed the FCBSI partners including Bexar County Judge Tommy Atkinson, City Council representative (2nd District) the Honorable Ivy Taylor and Charlene Dorio-Ortiz of the Bexar County Department of Community Investment. The key note presenter was motivational speaker Marlon Smith of Success, Inc. of Charlotte, North Carolina. The focus of the meeting was sustainability and collaboration. Participants completed capability statements, six month sustainability plans and developed letters to solicit funds from foundations, corporations and individuals.

Westover Leads SAMHSA Substance Abuse Disorders Credentialing Initiative Targeting HBCUs

Under a contract with the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, Partners for Recovery, Westover is coordinating a far-reaching initiative to help addiction professionals gain knowledge, advance credentialing standards, and foster best practices. Because of their seminal role in educating tomorrow’s workforce and developing today’s models of safe and effective treatment, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) occupy a central place in this initiative. Staff and faculty at these institutions are uniquely positioned to shepherd both students and practicing professionals through the credentialing process and to disseminate new developments and insights in the field.

On March 11-12 of this year in Birmingham, AL, Westover in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) HBCU Center for Excellence brought together representatives from 16 HBCUs scattered throughout the southeastern United States and beyond to learn from and contribute to a new certification curriculum. As with last year’s activities, Westover had prepared a comprehensive hardbound manual containing hundreds of PowerPoint slides and other presentation aids, as well as participant exercises and a pre/post test. Topics ranged from pharmacology and theories of counseling to professional ethics and special populations. Authorities in these disciplines gave dynamic presentations and led work group discussions. Before making any substantive preparations for next year’s academy, Westover is eager to assess the long-term effectiveness of the training and networking that recently took place. Within the next 6 months Westover will follow-up to determine any progress made toward certification and licensure among those who participated in this year’s event.
